About Commedia
Commedia Dell'Arte is a talented and passionate young actress.
Everyday she wakes up early, eats a healthy breakfast and takes a walk in the bright winter morning with her pet dog Arlecchino, all the way to the theater where she works hard at rehearsing her role.
Commedia stars in a play inspired by the lively, humorous Italian Comedy of the past.
She plays the role of Colombina (”Little Dove”), a clever and independent young maid in 17th century Venice. With her keen and active wit she truly shines among the spirited cast of the play.
Today is a special day at the theater: it’s Commedia’s costume rehearsal!
While she fixes her hairdo, little helper Arlecchino gathers Commedia’s books, play script and delicate dress shoes and fits them into her practical black shoulder bag. Commedia dons her warmest coat and off they go!
Commedia is looking forward to wearing her pretty costume: in the old days even a maid’s apron was stylish, with its diagonal stripes and delicate lace.
Inspiration
Commedia Dell’Arte was inspired by the theatrical tradition of Italian commedy. Her name means “play of professional artists”.
Her outfits are based on two of the most beloved characters: Arlecchino and Colombina.
Arlecchino is a quick, mischievious servant who wears a distinctive costume made of colorful diamond-shaped patches.
His counterpart is the bright maid Colombina, who dresses in smart gowns and a striped apron.
Commedia’s outfits reflect both characters.
An agile, modern dress with multi-colored diamond appliques, worn over a ruffled white shirt and black leggings, is the city girl’s everyday outfit. Her stage dress is modeled after baroque fashion, freshened up by the geometric pattern and cool color scheme.
